Bude’s Joss Ash put on a blistering performance to win the rescheduled Jesus Surf Classic at Croyde Bay, North Devon on Saturday September 22.
Ash narrowly beat St Ives ripper Jayce Robinson in a hotly fought final in 2-3ft swell with a slight onshore wind. Gary Wells and Tom Butler from Newquay came in third and fourth respectively.
The competition had been rescheduled from earlier in the month but there was still a huge turn out. Surfers travelled from all over Devon, Cornwall and from as far away as Wales to compete in the ever popular contest.
In the Junior event (Under 18) the final was an all Cornish affair with Tom Butler edging out Jayce Robinson and Toby Donachie into second and third, with Jack Butler doing really well making it in to fourth. Braunton’s Simon Twitchen took the Masters division this year ahead of Newquay’s Steve Harvey and Roger Knight, with Braunton’s Pete Oram coming in fourth.
All the other categories had been completed earlier in the month. During the presentations a tribute was made for Chris (Christine) Scott, one of the Christian Surfers stalwarts who passed away earlier this year, after being involved with the Organisation for 17 years. Husband Mike presented the trophies.
Once again the Surf Relief Board signed by 120 WQS surfers was on display, and raffle tickets sold. The draw will finally take place in November, and it is hoped around £800 will be raised for the work of Surf Relief UK. The next event of the ‘Jesus’ series is the Jesus Longboard classic at Polzeath, supported by nineplus and The Tubestation over the weekend of 6-7 October. Places still remain in all four categories (Open, Junior, Masters and Women’s). More information from www.christiansurfers.co.uk
