Coasteering
The extreme sport of coasteering in Devon has existed in various unofficial guises for a considerable amount of time, thanks to the diverse and challenging pull of the county's coastal landscape.
In the 1990's it emerged as a commercially guided recreational activity initially along the cliff coastline of Pembrokeshire in Wales. Its reach has extended not only to Devon and the South West, but Scotland as well.
Whilst the coasteering fraternity of yesteryear were happy, (or misguidedly brave enough), to jump around the county's rocky outcrops, caves and waves in shorts and t-shirt, today's coasteering collective tend to don wetsuit and helmet to ensure survival accompanies the thrill seeking.
The BBC’s ‘Holidays Out’ programme called it ‘the best liquid refreshment you can get’ and Everest mountaineer Chris Bonington found it ‘immensely enjoyable’.
